Biography

David Carty is an Assistant Professor with a 50/50 joint position in the Department of Physics and Department of Chemistry at Durham University in the UK. He was born in Kirkcaldy, Fife, Scotland, raised in Glenrothes, Fife, and attended St. Andrew's High School in Kirkcaldy. He graduated with a Master of Chemistry degree from The University of Edinburgh in 1999 where he worked as a project student with Prof. Robert Donovan. He then obtained a PhD in 2003 from The University of Birmingham where he conducted experiments under the supervision of Prof. Ian R. Sims (now of the University of Rennes, France) and Prof. Ian W. M. Smith FRS working towards a thesis entitled "Collisional Processes Of Astrochemical Importance at Very Low Temperatures". He then became an EU Young Researcher in the group of Prof. Gerard Meijer from 2003-2004 initially at the FOM Institute for Plasma Physics Rijhuizen, near Utrecht in The Netherlands, then latterly at the Fritz-Haber Institute der MPG in Berlin, Germany. From 2005-2007 he was then a postdoctoral research assistant at The University of Oxford in the group of Prof. Tim Softley (now of The University of Birmingham, UK). He then took up a joint lectureship in Chemistry and Physics at Durham University in September 2007.

David Carty is an experimentalist and his research interests are mainly in the fundamental physics and chemistry of atom-molecule and molecule-molecule collisions particularly at ultra-low temperatures for applications in astrophysics, fundamental chemical collision dynamics and quantum simulation. Most of the work centres on molecular beam deceleration techniques and laser spectroscopy.

David is a husband to Annabel and a father to Madeleine (born April 2010) and Sebastian (born April 2012). He enjoys swimming, caravanning holidays with his family and is a passionate fan of Scottish-football behemoths Glasgow Celtic.
