I grew up in Wallasey on the Wirral Peninsula where I attended the Mosslands School. From here I moved on to Durham University in 2003 and graduated with first class honors in 2007. My masters project involved the design and construction of a compact DAVLL (dichroic atomic vapour laser lock) setup for rubidium. Inspired by my masters project I decided to remain in Durham to pursue a PhD working with an ultracold mixture of 87Rb and 133Cs supervised by Simon Cornish. During the course of my PhD the experiment evolved from working with magnetic traps to optical traps and key results include the Bose-Einstein condensation of 133Cs, the demonstration of tunable interactions and the production of an two-species condensate of 87Rb and 133Cs. After the completion of my PhD I had lots of unfinished business and ideas to test using the experiment. To attempt to gain closure on several avenues of research I have remained on the RbCs experiment in Durham as a postdoctoral research associate since 2011. Currently, with theoretical support from Jeremy Hutson's group, we have branched out in the direction of an ultracold 85Rb - 133Cs mixture which has provided some novel and interesting physics. We have observed numerous interspecies Feshbach resonances in this mixture which provide promising starting points for the production of ultracold polar molecules.
When away from the lab I can normally be found in a boat on the River Wear here in Durham. Rowing is a great passion of mine and I am the men's captain of Durham Amateur Rowing Club. To relax I enjoy experimenting in the kitchen, reading and going to watch most kinds of live entertainment.
